The Key To Getting Rid Of Spiders In Your Pasadena Home

Have you tried to open a door with the wrong key? If so, you know that it doesn't work. The key may go into the keyhole, but if the teeth do not align with the tumblers, the key is no good. On the other hand, have you had a bunch of keys, but you were not sure which one would work for the lock? What do you do? You systematically try each key until you find the one that works, and when you find the one that unlocks the door or cabinet, you feel good — especially if it is an old hope chest filled with family heirlooms. It's not a matter of having many keys but the right key.

In the same way, you need to use the right key to get rid of spiders. The first step to unlocking the spider mystery is to secure the Pasadena pest control experts from Accutech Pest Management. With over two decades of spider removal experience, our locally owned and operated company has the knowledge and tools to resolve your spider problem.

You probably found our article because there are spiders in your home, and you want them out fast. We understand how upsetting it can be to have those creepy, crawly creatures in your Pasadena home. So, we wrote this article to help you discover the right key to stop spiders from infesting your house.

Pasadena Is Home To Many Types Of Spiders

The first key to spider removal is identification. Many people confuse spiders with insects, but they are different. While they both have jointed legs, spiders have eight legs, whereas insects have six. Insects often have wings or wing pads, but spiders have neither. Insects have antennae, but spiders do not have those appendages. Both animals have eyes, but spiders tend to have eight eyes in two rows, while insects have two compound eyes. Finally, an insect's body has three segments, but a spider has only two parts. The front section (cephalothorax) contains the mouthparts, eyes, and legs, and the rear part (abdomen) has the anus, spiracles, and genitals.

Like insects, spiders vary in size, color, behavior, and danger. These are the types of spiders common in the Pasadena area:

  • Black widow spiders
  • Brown recluse spiders
  • Cellar spiders
  • Grass spiders
  • House spiders
  • Jumping spiders
  • Wolf spiders

Identifying these spiders is necessary for elimination, so let's look briefly at each one on our list.

Adult black widow spiders have shiny black bodies with two orangish-red triangles which meet to form an hourglass on the underside of the abdomen. Young black widows have the same markings, but their bodies are orange or white. These venomous spiders live underneath stones and decks outside houses. When they enter Pasadena homes, they seek refuge in dark, undisturbed areas in garages, basements, crawl spaces, under desks, and furniture.

Although not as common as the black widow, the brown recluse is the other venomous spider in Pasadena. These spiders have a brown body with a violin-shaped marking on the back of the front part of their body (cephalothorax). Most spider species have eight eyes arranged in two rows, but the brown recluse has only six eyes in pairs. Like black widows, brown recluse spiders prefer to live in undisturbed areas in the home, which may include clothing.

Black widows create messy webs near the ground to capture prey, but orb weavers build magnificent webs in corners of a building or the yard among vegetation. With over 2,800 species in the orb weaver family worldwide, one can imagine the variety, but in the Pasadena area, the black and yellow garden spider is the most common. You can deduce the body color of these spiders by their name. In addition to the large, circular webs, their black and yellow oval abdomens have a black stripe with white spots in the center. Their legs also have black and yellow markings.

Many boys grew up playing with daddy longlegs or cellar spiders. As their name suggests, these pale yellow to light brown spiders enjoy living in cellars, basements, and other dark, damp locations. Cellar spiders have either short or long bodies with much longer legs. Female long-bodied cellar spiders have the lengthiest body, 1/4 to 5/16-inch, and legs that are 1 3/4 to 1 15/16-inches.

House spiders are the most common in Pasadena homes and throughout the country. Female house spiders have a 3/16 to 5/16 yellowish-brown elongated abdomen with several white stripes meeting at an angle. Males have similar coloration but slightly smaller bodies. Unlike orb weaver spiders, house spiders create tangled webs in the doorway and window frames, basements, garages, and crawl spaces to catch insects for food.

Grass spiders are usually in the yard surrounding the house, but sometimes these 1/2 to 3/4-inch spiders have two dark brown bands running the length of their yellow, brown, or cream-colored bodies. Grass spiders create funnel webs in window sills or grassy areas.

Although sometimes mistaken for black widow spiders, jumping spiders are compact black, brown, or grey spiders with pale markings and short legs. They do not have the hourglass mark; these hairy spiders have bright or incandescent yellow, blue, green, or red markings. Because they see better during the day than at night, you will find these arachnids around windows and doors.

Wolf spiders have dark brown hairy bodies, pale stripes, and long, spiny legs. These spiders live near baseboards. and under furniture on the ground level. They do not spin silky homes but capture prey by chasing them at night.

No matter what spiders are in your Pasadena house, Accutech Pest Management can remove them. Our trained technicians will identify the problematic spider species infesting your home.

Why A Spider Infestation In Your Home Can Be Problematic

There are many reasons why an infestation of these common house spiders is a problem. The first reason is that black widow and brown recluse spiders can hurt friends and family members. Although neither spider species is aggressive, they will bite if threatened or squeezed. A bite from a black widow results in fever, nausea, increased blood pressure, and sweating. Pain at the bite site and symptoms last for up to three hours. Fortunately, fatalities rarely occur as long as you seek medical attention promptly.

Because brown recluse spiders hide in shoes and clothing piles, a bite often occurs when the spider gets squeezed when a person puts on the pants, shirt, or shoes where the spider resides. A bite from a brown recluse initially causes restlessness, fever, and difficulty sleeping. In some cases, the venom eats tissue at the bite site producing an ulcer that penetrates deep into the flesh. Seek immediate medical attention to stop tissue damage.

Although most spiders are not dangerous, a high spider population in your Pasadena house indicates a potential insect problem because spiders eat insects. Spiders consume cockroaches, ants, crickets, moths, mosquitoes, flies, and fleas. All insects contaminate food; some spread bacterial diseases, viruses, and parasitic worms. While the spiders are doing you a favor by catching these pests, their presence may be due to a high infestation of insects.

Accutech Pest Management protects your family by removing the different house spiders in Pasadena homes. If the spiders are symptomatic of an insect infestation, we can eliminate them too.
