Pests Common to the Chesapeake Bay Area
Residents of Shady Side encounter a variety of pests throughout the year. Living near the water opens you up to different pests in landlocked areas. Some of the common pests in the area include:
- Rodents. Mice and rats are persistent pests, adept at squeezing through small openings and seeking shelter indoors, especially during colder months.
- Insects. Shady Side's warm summers and humid climate create ideal breeding grounds for insects like cockroaches, ants, and mosquitoes. Stink bugs and ticks are also common nuisance pests in the area.
- Arachnids. Spiders are beneficial predators that help control other insect populations, but some residents may prefer to keep them outdoors.
What Attracts Bed Bugs & How to Prevent Them from Entering Your Home
While a bed bug infestation can be a stressful experience, it's important to dispel a common misconception: bed bugs are not attracted to dirt or uncleanliness. Their presence is not a reflection of hygiene standards.
Bed bugs are most attracted to the following:
- Carbon dioxide (CO2). Humans exhale CO2, which acts as a beacon for bed bugs searching for a blood meal. They can detect CO2 from up to 15 feet away.
- Body heat. Bed bugs are drawn to the warmth emitted by humans as they sleep.
- Dark bed sheets. Bed bugs frequent dark areas, and they are most attracted to black and red shelters, which can include bed sheets.
- Dirty laundry. Since laundry smells similar to a potential host, bed bugs are often drawn to piles of dirty laundry.
Since bed bugs are excellent hitchhikers, a proactive approach is essential for prevention. You can be proactive by being mindful of the following:
- Travel awareness. Be cautious in environments with a high turnover of people, such as hotels, hostels, and public transportation. Inspect luggage seams, mattresses, and box springs for signs of bed bugs (live insects, shed skins, or rust-colored stains). Store luggage on luggage racks and avoid placing it on the bed.
- Used furniture. You should inspect secondhand furniture thoroughly before buying it or bringing it your property. Look for the signs mentioned above, and consider using a flashlight to examine crevices and seams.
- Vacuuming routinely. Vacuum carpets, mattresses, and upholstered furniture regularly, paying particular attention to the edges and seams. Discard the vacuum cleaner bag immediately after use in an outdoor sealed container.
- Declutter. Reduce clutter around beds and bedrooms. This minimizes potential hiding spots for bed bugs.
- Mattress encasements. Encase mattresses and box springs in covers specifically designed to trap bed bugs.
If you suspect a bed bug infestation, it's crucial to contact a qualified pest control professional immediately. Attempting DIY treatment is often unsuccessful and can exacerbate the problem. A professional can effectively identify the infestation source and implement a tailored treatment plan.
